The 2nd time troop 195 has taken part in a Canoe the Wild guided trip. Last time with the St Croix River, this time it as a 5 day Allagash canoe trip. We spotted several moose, saw lots of eagles and other bird life. Tons of hands on experiences to sharpen outdoor living skills.
While many of our trips are for adults, families and individuals to take part in, this custom 5 day guided canoe trip was outfitted and guided for the Allagash Wilderness Waterway Foundation (AWWF) Youth on the Allagash (YOTA) Program with High School students from Madawaska and Ashland. Students learned a ton of skills, cooked over an open fire, caught fish, interviewed park ranger Allyssa at Michaud Farms about career opportunities in the outdoors, heard about career opportunities as a Maine Guide from Dave and Jeanie, learned how to be good stewards of the land and water, took part in readings from the latest AWWF books ‘The Allagash Explorer’ and ‘This Extraordinary Place: A Guide to Allagash Ecology’. Jeanie Cote assisted Dave Conley with guiding the trip. Another NE Mistissibi River canoe trip is in the books. 9 days and 8 nights on the river. Caught brook trout and northern pike. Paddle miles and miles of lively water,, class I, II and III Rapids. didn’t see another soul the entire time! Check out our 2026 schedule when it becomes available for northern canoe trip offerings.
Here are images of our 5 day Allagash Canoe Trip that we outfitted and guided for the Allagash Wilderness Waterway Foundation Youth on the Allagash Trip (YOTA). Students nor only learned about the history of the region, and heard from the head park ranger Trevor OLeary about the park and future job opportunities. Students learned about potential guiding opportunities as future Maine guides. Students learned lots of skills including canoe poling, paddling in whitewater and proper strokes, making a fire with a spark, fly fishing, cooking over an open fire and more. While this trip was a custom trip for students, Canoe the Wild offers open session trips season long for individuals, families and groups to take part in. Canoeing the Allagash with experienced guides is a sought-after experience, so I knew I had to book my spot early. Fortunately, Canoe the Wild still had availability for early September, which aligned perfectly with my travel plans. They provided clear directions to our meeting point in Ashland, Maine, and sent over a comprehensive packing list. The company took care of everything—guides, tents, sleeping mats, all our meals, and even dry bags for our gear. One highlight for me was our stop at Eagle Lake to check out the Ghost Trains. Bob kindly let me borrow a camper’s whistle, reminding me that when nature calls at 3 AM, it’s good to be prepared for anything!
