Canoeing Maine’s Allagash Wilderness Waterway and Ghost Trains

March 31, 2025 By Dave Conley

Ava Kabouchy article and images are featured in the March issue of Go World Travel Magazine. Ava took part in a Canoe the Wild, Seven day Allagash canoe trip, September, 2024. Below, the sun sets over the Allagash Wilderness Waterway

Canoeing the Allagash with experienced guides is a sought-after experience, so I knew I had to book my spot early. Fortunately, Canoe the Wild still had availability for early September, which aligned perfectly with my travel plans. They provided clear directions to our meeting point in Ashland, Maine, and sent over a comprehensive packing list. The company took care of everything—guides, tents, sleeping mats, all our meals, and even dry bags for our gear. One highlight for me was our stop at Eagle Lake to check out the Ghost Trains. Bob kindly let me borrow a camper’s whistle, reminding me that when nature calls at 3 AM, it’s good to be prepared for anything!

Below is one of two ghost trains located near the shores of Eagle Lake, Allagash Wilderness Waterway State Park.

Our 2024 Season in Pictures

December 27, 2024 By Dave Conley

The 2024 season was a busy one with twenty outings and over 175 guests in attendance. We were back in Quebec Canada again with 2 whitewater trips, in June on the Bonaventure River and in July on the NE Mistissibi River. We had six outings on the St Croix River, eleven Allagash trips and a wildlife photography workshop at a remote Maine lake. Generous grant funding sources  enabled over 40 teens to connect with nature while on the Allagash and St Croix Rivers. These outings were made possible by the Allagash Wilderness Waterway Foundation (AWWF)  and the Maine Outdoor Learning Initiative Grant. Our 2025 schedule has been up for sometime now with some trips already full. We’ll be back on the Bonaventure and NE Mistissibi Rivers this 2025 season. Our wildlife and moose photography workshop is happening again in late June. You can check out all our 2025 outings by clicking on our 2025 schedule. Why don’t you join us this season? you can sign up as an individual, with friends or as a family. Keep in mind, we do custom trips for private groups as well.

AWWF Youth on the Allagash Program, May 28- June 1, 2024

June 2, 2024 By Dave Conley

The first of two trips this season with the Allagash Wilderness Waterway Foundation Youth on the Allagash Program. provided free of charge for St John River Valley students.  Five days and four nights. Students interviewed park rangers, learned how to handle a canoe in whitewater, explored the artifacts of the logging history, took part in camp chores including starting a fire with a spark, fire wood gathering, cooking, dishes, baking over an open fire and took on leadership roles.  Students learned to leave the campsite better then they found it.  We’ll be doing a 2nd trip in July.
